Alfred Elmer Kuphal "Al", age 80, passed away at his home in Markesan following a few years of illness.
Al was born on May 17, 1937, in Milwaukee. His parents Herb and Isabel (Sohrweide) Kuphal ,moved to Markesan when Al was 5 and he called Markesan his home from then on. His father operated the Ideal Market (meat) in Markesan for a few years and Al often told of helping his father there. Al attended school in Markesan K-12, graduating in 1955. Right out of high school Al joined the U.S. Navy and served his country for 4 years. He liked telling everyone that the Navy allowed him to travel parts of the worlds, "for free." Upon returning home Al attended University of WI Stevens Point for a semester, but chose to join the work force, holding down two major jobs, Speed Queen in Ripon and D & M Machining in Markesan until retirement. Al was united in Marriage to Shirley McCarthy at Wisconsin Dells on December 17, 1960, shortly afterwards they moved to Markesan where they lived for almost 57 years.
Al had lots of interests and talents: Bowling (coaching Jr. League); woodworking (built several pieces of furniture for the home, (including 2 grandfather clocks); hunting and fishing (several trips with good friends Dave and Don to Door County); built a model railroad layout and several radio-controlled airplanes. He enjoyed camping, especially the times when all 4 grandchildren could join us at Pearl Lake. Early years of camping/traveling Canada/US. Later years camping/traveling in Texas. Lots of good memories and good friends from both places. He could repair just about everything, which he liked to say, "helped on repair bills." Al was an avid duck stamp, coin and gun collector. He was a faithful Packer fan, win or lose.
Al is survived by wife Shirley; son, Jim Kuphal and daughter, Sherry (Gary) Rowe; 4 grandchildren, Corey Kuphal, Nicole Kuphal both of (MN) and Matthew (Jordan) Schroeder and Emily Schroeder all of (TX); brother, Robert (Carol) Kuphal of Green Lake and Melvin (Sandy) Kuphal of Fairwater; a niece and nephew and several cousins.
He is preceded in death by his parents, grandparents and several loved aunts and uncles.
The family would like to thank: Drs. Wright and Kumar who saw Al through his health problems; our dear daughter Sherry who was there in so many ways during illnesses in Texas; the wonderful Hospice workers who cared for him until the end, with special thanks to Elmo and Noreen for their comforting visits and words of support to both of us. Thank you Mike Keller for endless help. Thank you Lord for sustaining both of us through this part of our journey. Rest in peace husband.
