Elizabeth "Liz" Zwiazek

Elizabeth “Liz” Zwiazek, age 87 of Markesan, passed away on Monday, October 12, 2026, at Markesan Resident Home.

Liz was born on May 17, 1939, in Warsaw, Poland, daughter of Frederyk and Marianna (Janowska) Tom. Liz came to America with her family in 1958-1959. On June 24, 1962, Liz was united in marriage to Frank Zwiazek at Holy Trinity Church in Chicago, Il. She built a life marked by compassion, creativity, and care for others. She was known as a kind, caring and empathetic woman whose warmth touched many people, and she lived out those qualities in both her work and her daily life. In 1962, Liz graduated with a Nursing Degree at Saint Anne’s Hospital School of Nursing in Chicago. She later continued her education and earned a degree in Utilization Review. Her calling to care for others guided much of her life. She continued to work at Lutheran General Hospital until her retirement, when her and Frank moved to Wisconsin in 1999. Even after retiring, she remained active and devoted to helping others, going on to work at Fountain View Care Center nursing home in Ripon. She also gave her time as a volunteer at the local thrift store and community food pantry in Ripon. Outside of her work, Liz was a woman of many talents and interests. She was very artistic and loved to paint, create stained glass, and knit. She loved cooking and enjoyed gathering with family and friends. In her earlier years, she took part in theater and singing, and she even raced motorcycles in Poland before coming to America. She also loved nature and took joy in growing things as well as harvesting wild mushrooms. Her love of family pets was unmatched. Liz will be remembered for her wonderful caring spirit, her creativity, and the generous way she welcomed others into her life. 

Liz is survived by her loving husband Frank Zwiazek; two daughters, Christina (Mike) Sheehan and Dorothy (Mo) Crowe; one grandson, Jeremy (Claire) Brick; two nieces, Elizabeth Olson and Katherine (Bob) Liebich; two great nieces, Gretchen and Terry; she is further survived by other relatives in Poland and many friends.
