Fred Laverne Bartz, age 90 of Markesan formerly of Altoona, WI, passed away on Wednesday, November 6, 2024, at ThedaCare Medical Center Berlin.
Fred was born on September 17, 1934 in Iowa, a son of Fred and Irene (Schima) Bartz. He was united in marriage to Dorothy Schaefer on July 17, 1981, in Carroll Iowa. Fred retired from Fareway grocery stores after 30+ years. He was proud of his military service in the Army during WWII, where he assisted in processing Elvis into the service. Fred loved taking the day bus to the casino and gambling. He was a friend to everyone that knew him and could strike up conversation with anyone. Fred enjoyed repairing and restoring antique furniture. He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.
Fred is survived by his three children, Susan Merk, Eric (Patty) Bartz and Allison (Chris) Kleiber; seven grandchildren, Zachariah (Jen) Merk, Jessica (Justin) Kramer, Rachel (Tony) Schaden, Allison (Dakota Madel) Bartz, Matthew Bartz, Elias Kleiber and Macey Kleiber; many great grand-children; sister, Helen (Roger) Wegner; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy in 2020 and two brothers, Glenn (Muriel) Bartz and Merle (Jean) Bartz.
Visitation for Fred will be held from 10:00 to 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 16, 2024, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church W3377 Main Street, Manchester, WI.
A memorial service will follow at 12:00 p.m. at church with Pastor Jeffrey Drake officiating. Burial will take place at Markesan Memorial Cemetery with Military Honors provided by Abendroth-Connolly American Legion Post 282 Honor Guard.
