Lucy Jane Braaksma went to her heavenly home on Monday, July 13, 2026, at The Meadows of Fall River.
Lucy was born on April 9, 1937, daughter of Louis and Alice (Schregardus) Smedema. Lucy grew up in Randolph, where she attended school. On October 12, 1991, she married Gordon Braaksma at Randolph Evangelical Church, creating a life filled with love and cherished moments. Together, they built a beautiful life centered around their families and enjoyed their travels. Lucy was the proud owner of Lucy’s Café in Randolph for over a decade and dedicated many years serving others as a CNA. She was also a devoted member of Friesland Community Church.
Lucy is survived by her husband, Gordon Braaksma of Randolph; her two daughters Kathy (Randy) Hemling of Randolph, Linda (Kevin) Potenberg of Cambria, son Rick (Maria) Alsum of Fox Lake and daughter-in-law, Diana Alsum of Fox Lake; ten grandchildren, Rachel (Corey) Bradley, Megan Hemling, Aleshia (Clint) Redeker, Andy (Shelly) Hemling, Rebecca (Jim) Whistleman, Sheena Tamminga, Ale (Will) Wajda, Amber (Lee) Redeker, Jacob (Kelly) Hewuse, and Shelby (Cole) Olson; twenty-two great grandchildren and one great great granddaughter. Lucy is further survived by her stepchildren, son Brian (Jan) Braaksma of Randolph, daughter Suanne Wilson of Niceville, FL and son Robert (Yesenia) Braaksma of Gilbert, AZ; eight grandchildren, Melissa (Joshua) Neeb, Laura (Michael) Warner, Amy (Shawn) Wedlund, Yansey (Jaymee) Wilson, Kyle Wilson, Brittany Braaksma, Brendan Braaksma and Breanna Braaksma and eleven great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her son, Terry Alsum, grandsons, Rob Hemling and Benjamin Alsum in infancy, her parents, brothers, John (Connie) Smedema and James (Sis) Smedema, nephews, Bob Smedema, infant Dale Smedema and step son-in-law, Michael Wilson.
A visitation will be held from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 18, 2026, at Friesland Community Church, f107 East Winnebago Street Friesland, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Darrin Vant Hoff officiating. Burial will be at Friesland Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Friesland Community Church in memory of Lucy.
