Newton Vander Woude

October 7, 1924 — May 14, 2023

Newton Vander Woude, age 98 of Waupun, passed away on Sunday, May 14, 2023, at the Christian Home in Waupun.

Newton was born on October 7, 1924, in the village of Hantumhuizen, province of Friesland, the Netherlands, a son of Egbert and Dirkje (Couperus) Vander Woude. Newton’s mother passed away when he was 3 years old, six weeks after his sister Tina was born. A short time later his dad married Jeltje Kooistra who helped raise the family. Newton was a teenager when forced into hiding for 1 year and 9 months during the Nazi occupation in the Netherlands. That time in life greatly impacted his life and love for freedom. In July of 1953, Newton and his family immigrated to the United States and settled in Randolph where they resided for 56 years before moving to Waupun. After the passing of Florence in 2011, Newton was blessed with a second marriage to Esther (Kok) Vant Hoff on March 16, 2013. Newton was a Police Officer in the Netherlands. After coming to America, he learned the trade of an electrician and worked for 19 years with Van’s Electric and was a member of the Electrical Union. During his retirement he was an avid golfer. He was a longtime member of the Second Christian Reformed Church of Randolph and later of Emmanuel Waupun Church. Newton was a fun-loving man, who always took the good with the bad, and gracefully weathered all of life’s challenges. Newton was known for his storytelling, great sense of humor and his ability to keep others laughing. He was always a joy to be around and his memories will last forever.

Newton is survived by his wife, Esther Vant Hoff; five children, Alice (Lloyd) Satterfield of Texas, Edward “Woody” (Colleen) Vander Woude of Arizona, Janice Andrews of Eau Claire, Margaret (Norman) Kary of Texas, and Kathleen (Marc) Clements of Waupun; ten grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren with another great grandson expected in July; sister, Tina (Jelle) Vellema of Holland and sister-in-law, Reiny Stellingwerf; further survived by Esther’s family, four children, John (Kathy) Vant Hoff, LuAnn (John) Reuter, Patti (Tim) Van Denend and Randy (Gina) Vant Hoff; fifteen grandchildren; three great grandchildren with another expected in September; sister, Marlene Hughes; special friends, Chuck and Kathy Schlieve.
